> **Adapted community discussion:** Paraphrased and condensed from an anonymized public OpenClaw Discord support conversation from September 2026. Technical guidance was reviewed for OpenClaw 2026.9.3.

My agent and its monitoring stopped working. The server console says `No space left on device`, and even the system journal cannot create a new log. The OpenClaw configuration still validates. How can I recover the Gateway safely?

That is a host storage failure, not an OpenClaw configuration failure. Use the provider console and check both disk blocks and inodes before deleting anything:

```bash
df -hT
df -i
du -xhd1 / 2>/dev/null | sort -h
journalctl --disk-usage
```

To create a small amount of emergency headroom on a systemd host, you can ask journald to keep a bounded archive. Journal vacuuming permanently removes older archived entries, so preserve any incident logs you still need first when feasible:

```bash
sudo journalctl --vacuum-size=200M
df -h /
```

On a Debian or Ubuntu host, `sudo apt-get clean` can clear the package cache. Do not delete OpenClaw configuration, workspaces, SQLite files, or `-wal`, `-shm`, and `-journal` sidecars.

Once the filesystem has stable free space, restart and verify:

```bash
openclaw gateway restart
openclaw gateway status --require-rpc
openclaw status --all
openclaw channels status --probe
```

Would resizing the server be the simpler fix? I expect I will need more space anyway. Could I resize and skip the cleanup commands?

A provider-supported resize can give you emergency headroom, but it may require a reboot and it does not prove that the filesystem expanded or that OpenClaw restarted. After the resize, check:

```bash
df -h /
openclaw gateway status
```

If the filesystem still reports 100 percent, stop and follow the hosting provider’s filesystem-expansion guidance for the actual device and filesystem. If the Gateway is stopped, restart it through its service owner and check status again. Resizing restores capacity, but it does not identify the growth source.

Is it normal for OpenClaw to need more and more disk space? I want to know whether this will keep happening after I recover it.

Some growth is normal because OpenClaw retains session history, automation data, media, and workspace files. It should not continuously consume hundreds of gigabytes on its own. Common large owners include container layers, backups, downloads, local model files, media, and runaway system logs.

Treat the resize as breathing room. After recovery, measure the largest storage owners over time and add alerts for both free bytes and free inodes.

The Gateway status now says the runtime is active, the last exit was clean, and the connectivity probe is OK.

That confirms the Gateway process is reachable again. Check `df -h /` to make sure free space remains, then run `openclaw status` and send one harmless test message to the agent. Keep monitoring disk use afterward. If the test message fails, collect the first new error after free space was restored.
