Rollback is blocked by a newer state schema

Adapted community discussion: Paraphrased and condensed from an anonymized public OpenClaw Discord support conversation from August 2026. Technical guidance was reviewed for OpenClaw 2026.9.3.

I tried to roll OpenClaw back, but it refuses to start because my state database uses schema version 8 and the older build only supports schema 1. Is there a safe way past that error?

That is a one-way state-schema mismatch. The database was migrated by a newer OpenClaw build, and reinstalling an older binary cannot make that database older. First confirm which binary is actually running:

openclaw --version
which -a openclaw

Preview any managed rollback before applying it:

openclaw update --tag KNOWN_GOOD_VERSION --dry-run

Replace the placeholder with the exact release you intend to use. If that release cannot read the current schema, return to a compatible newer build or restore a verified complete backup from before the migration. Do not edit SQLite schema numbers or version markers manually.

The active CLI is the older release, and which -a openclaw shows the package-manager installation I expected.

That confirms the old binary is active while the state is newer. Check the managed service command with openclaw gateway status --deep, because the service and interactive shell can point to different installs.

A schema-incompatible rollback requires all writers stopped, the current state preserved separately, a verified pre-upgrade OpenClaw backup, and the matching OpenClaw release. A partial file copy is not a safe rollback.

The deep status check also says my current openclaw.json is invalid for the older build. Several newer config sections are rejected before the Gateway can start.

That shows the rollback is partial. The package or source revision, configuration, databases, and retained files must come from a compatible point in time. A complete recovery point must cover openclaw.json, the shared state/openclaw.sqlite, every agents/<id>/agent/openclaw-agent.sqlite database including custom agent directories, and any workspaces, credentials, or retained originals needed by the installation.

Verify the archive and restore it to a fresh staging directory before any controlled cutover:

openclaw backup verify /path/to/pre-upgrade-backup.tar.gz
openclaw backup restore /path/to/pre-upgrade-backup.tar.gz --target /fresh/empty/staging-dir

If no complete pre-upgrade recovery point exists, the practical safe option is to return to the newer compatible build.

On macOS, it is also worth checking for a local Time Machine snapshot even if no manual backup was made:

tmutil listlocalsnapshots /

A suitable snapshot is useful only if it covers the complete recovery set from one point in time. Restore and verify it offline with the Gateway stopped. Copying a live SQLite file can miss write-ahead-log data.

Good addition. Keep the Gateway stopped during recovery, preserve the current files, verify the archive, and restore the matching release and complete recovery set together.
